The Skin’s Barrier

The Skin’s BarrierYour skin is the largest organ on your body. It is there to protect your insides from the outside elements. But if you don’t take proper care of it, it cannot do the job it was made for. There are multiple factors that can cause damage, and some easy ways you can prevent it.

What Is Your Skin’s Barrier?

You skin’s barrier is the outermost layer of your skin. This layer is exposed to the largest amount of conditions, and must stand up to all kinds of environmental factors. Now add to that the multitude of toxic skincare products that you apply each day, and you’ll start to get a feel for why your skin might become damaged.

Healthy skin should feel smooth and hydrated. It should remind you of an infant’s brand new skin. An infant’s skin has not been exposed to as many factors, and is therefore in a very healthy state. Once the barrier becomes damaged, conditions like wrinkles, acne marks, breakouts, extra dry skin and more can happen.

Factors That Cause Damage

Think of all the things your skin is exposed to on a daily basis. Here is a list of some of the conditions that might cause damage to your skin’s natural barrier:

  • Sulphates
  • Harsh scrubs
  • Water that is too hot or too cold
  • Soaking until your skin gets wrinkly or prune-like
  • Products with irritating ingredients
  • Drying cleansers
  • Wind/Cold
  • Swimming pool chemicals
  • Exfoliating acids

Ways To Prevent Damage

The best way to make sure your barrier does not become damaged is to use preventative measures. Use gentle cleansers, lukewarm water, hydration mists, with a breathable barrier like coconut oil on top. Avoid over washing, and ditch the scrubs. Studies show these do more damage than good.

Avoid skincare products with added fragrances, pthalates, petroleum products, sulfates, polyunsaturated oil, and preservatives. A great alternative is coconut oil. Coconut oil has a naturally delicious scent and can be used on hair, skin and nails. It can reverse signs of damage by providing your skin with healthy fats, providing a protective barrier, and retaining moisture.

Coconut Oil Works is a less greasy version that still provides all the benefits of traditional coconut oil. It is easier, less messy and very convenient. It is applied with a spray bottle, making it ideal for travel and on the go skin goodness. You can take it with you to the beach, on a skiing trip, or pretty much anywhere you are headed. You skin and hair will thank you.
